What is an autoimmune disease?
An autoimmune disease is a disease which is caused when the immune system of the body goes kaput or becomes very sensitive for some reason. The job of the immune system is to protect and guard the human body against all types of antigens and external factors that harm it. But under certain circumstances, this system starts malfunctioning and becomes over sensitive. It starts by over reacting to external conditions which are otherwise normal, and with time, starts causing diseases in reaction.
So, in simple words, autoimmune diseases are the diseases that our body itself manufactures for us. These diseases are both genetic disorders and acquired, and a person with this condition has to be very careful with his/her lifestyle. This problem is not just seen in adults, as autoimmune disease symptoms in children have also been found. There are many diseases that have been clubbed in the list of autoimmune diseases and there are many that are being researched to understand their cause and hence, stay in the list of suspected autoimmune diseases.
