Burping a Lot After Eating

Burping a Lot After Eating

Burping after eating is a common problem faced by everyone. But knowing how to deal with it can save you from embarrassing yourself.
Rajib Singha
In clinical terms, burping is known as eructation. It refers to a condition wherein a person expels gas out of his stomach through his mouth, with a sound that is referred to as 'burp'. It is also accompanied by an odor, which may be unpleasantly horrid. This problem is common with every one of us, and can cause a great deal of embarrassment in public, especially when you are lunching with your boss or the like.
Causes
When you are belching excessively, then you must understand that your stomach is uncomfortable. This is because when the stomach gets distended or inflated, it responds with belching. This inflation usually occurs when you swallow a lot of air while drinking or eating. So once the body expels this trapped air, it relieves itself. Ergo, one of the most common causes of burping is gulping down your food, instead of chewing it properly. Also, drinking liquids rapidly, causes more air to be swallowed.
It is common to burp after drinking carbonated drinks. This results from the carbon dioxide that is expelled from the drinks. Other causes include mouth breathing, drinking liquids from a straw, poorly fitted dentures, and even regular gum chewing. Also, certain medications may be the cause of constant burping after eating.
Excessive burping causes may be a manifestation of certain medical conditions. The common ones include:
  • Acid reflux disease
  • Gastrointestinal infection
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Celiac disease
  • Ulcer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Esophagus cancer
  • Anxiety
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Undigested material
Burping a lot during pregnancy, is one of the symptoms that most expecting mothers come across. For some mothers, it may become worse with certain foods and drinks. The cause for this, according to experts, is the slowed digestion that is caused by the changing hormonal levels in the body.
Treatment
Try to change your eating habits. Start eating or drinking slowly. Always eat with your mouth closed. If you are someone who is prone to develop gas, then limit on foods such as apples, artichokes, asparagus, baked beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, green peppers, lentils, lettuce, onions, peaches, pears, peas, potatoes, and radishes.
Quick Home Remedies
  • Drinking herbal teas help in reducing instances of excessive burping.
  • Chewing on cloves, after you have had your meal, also helps.
  • Garlic soup is a delicious home remedy for belching, especially during winters.
  • Place some fresh mint leaves in a glass of drinking water. Wait for sometime, and drink the solution after your lunch or dinner.
Now, if your food habits are healthy, meaning if you eat and drink slowly, chewing down every bit of food, and still you are burping a lot lately, then it may due to an underlying medical condition. If you are burping almost everyday, more than 3 - 4 times a day, then it is better to pay a visit to the doctor, and rule our potential problems. In such cases, it is not the burping that is the concern, but the underlying cause.
In most cases, burping may not be a serious issue, and would not warrant any medical attention. However, for some people it may be a serious problem with their digestive health. So if you notice that you are burping like crazy, it is best not to delay the doctor's visit.
