Nausea, or the general feeling of unease and discomfort in the stomach, in ordinary cases, is caused as a side effect of eating certain foods. It can also be caused due to sea sickness, exposure to any strong perfume, or excess consumption of alcohol. But, if you experience constant nausea, that may or may not be accompanied with vomiting and dizziness, there can be other serious reasons for the same.
Nausea can be classified into short-term and long-term nausea; and the causes vary accordingly. Short-term nausea, as the name suggests, is simply the instantaneous reaction caused due to exposure or consumption of certain products. There are no serious underlying causes for it. But, if you are constantly feeling nauseated, there may be a possibility of a disorder.
Difficulty or inability to digest food properly can cause disorders of the stomach and nausea. Improper eating habits and lifestyle are the major causes of indigestion. It can also occur as a side effect of certain medication, or as a symptom of acid reflux disease, ulcers, stomach cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.
Nausea during pregnancy is very common and natural. It is termed as morning sickness. Its exact cause is unknown. However, change in hormonal levels and sensitivity to odors can be the primary causes.
Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the stomach caused due to bacterial infection. Consuming spoiled or contaminated food and water can lead to gastroenteritis. Vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, loss of appetite and nausea are the symptoms of this disease.
Nausea is also one of the classic symptoms of infection or inflammation in the middle ear. Ear infection is caused due to bacteria or virus. Other symptoms involve ear pain, bleeding in the ear, chills, vertigo, fever, etc. Frequent or constant nausea is a symptom of chronic ear infection.
Alcoholism has adverse effects on the human body. Sickness and nausea are the common side effects of excessive intake of alcohol. On the other hand, nausea is also one of the withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism. It can be a side effect of alcohol detox. People consuming alcohol for the first time are likely to suffer from heavy nausea.
Food Poisoning is caused due to consumption of contaminated food. Eating raw food without washing, uncooked or unhygienic food can cause food poisoning. It is commonly observed in children. Similar to gastroenteritis, food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, etc.
We all know that migraine causes severe pain in the head. But, many people also complain of stomach problems and nausea when suffering from migraine. The exact reason for the same is unknown. It is suggested that changes in hormone levels cause nausea when suffering from migraine.
Apart from these, nausea and uneasiness can also be a symptom of liver and gallbladder diseases, cancer, ulcer, gastritis, side effects of medications, etc. Similarly, feeling tired, uneasy and nauseated all the time may be due to disequilibrium and insomnia. If you are feeling nauseous after eating, then there may be a possibility of disorders caused due to increased sensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract.
Constant nausea, dizziness, uneasiness and abdominal discomfort should be brought to the notice of the doctor immediately. Short-term nausea can be treated with home remedies and over-the-counter medication. On the other hand, if suffering from the aforementioned causes, prescription medication and other related treatment methods will be adopted. Pregnant women should consult the doctor for medication to ease the discomfort. If nausea is caused as a side effect of any medication, inform your doctor about it.
You Can Do This
If you are in a hot and stuffy room, get out immediately and breathe in some fresh air.
Take rest and lie down. Slowing down activities help in reducing nausea.
If nausea is accompanied with vomiting, stop eating anything. Avoid any solid food until vomiting subsides completely.
Have clear fluids like plain drinking water to treat dehydration. Avoid having any other drinks.
If you are wearing tight-fitting and uncomfortable clothes and shoes, loosen them and relax.
Try having plain low-fat food like crackers. Majority of people feel better when they have light snacks.
Ginger tea, ginger ale helps in treating upset stomach effectively.
Avoid having fatty and dairy products as they can trigger off nausea.
If you are feeling nauseated and are about to vomit, do not curb the urge. Vomiting is the body's way of getting rid of foreign stuff.
► You should identify the factors causing nausea and stay away from them.
► If you suffer from indigestion and other stomach problems, try having a bland diet for a couple of days. You should avoid eating spicy or fatty food as it increases nausea.
► You can maintain a food diary to note down all the foods you eat. This will help in finding the foods that cause nausea and stomach disorders.
► You should change your eating habits and lifestyle if you suffer from frequent stomach discomfort. Have lighter and frequent meals, eat slowly and avoid having meals very late at night.
► If you have to take any medication, make sure you consult your doctor about it. Also inform him about any noticeable side effects.
Nausea has a debilitating effect on people; but, it can be treated with proper treatment methods. Lastly, remember that nausea can be prevented to a great extent by adopting proper eating habits and a good lifestyle. Take care!
