Your hair is one of your assets, and the state it's in indicates a lot about your health too. The appearance and quality of your hair depends on how healthy your scalp is. Therefore, it is important to maintain a clean and hygienic scalp to avoid the incidence of an infection, and thereby, maintain a lush mane.
Possible Causes of a Painful Scalp
Dandruff
Shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp is referred to as dandruff. Some amount of flaking is considered normal, but it can turn into a chronic condition, which is problematic. Such individuals experience an unusual amount of flaking as a result of certain triggers. Dandruff can cause the scalp to pain, as it induces itchiness, and frequent scratching may result in an injury.
Infection
Infections of the scalp can cause pain. The infection could be bacterial or parasitic. Red patches, black-colored dots, and blisters are possible manifestations of any of such infection. Pain accompanied with an itchy sensation is a straightforward symptom.
Burning Scalp Syndrome
Hair shedding in a particular spot is seen with an inflammation in the affected area. This may feel rather painful and itchy. This is usually a noted side effect of hair loss.
Headache as a Result of Tension
This type of headache is very common. The pain in such cases is dull, diffused, and non-pulsating in the region of the neck, extending to the scalp.
Head Lice
Head lice are an obligate ectoparasite that attach themselves on the human scalp, feeding on their blood. A lice infestation is extremely harmful, and causes considerable itching. Relentless scratching can irritate the scalp and cause it to pain.
These were a few common causes that result in a painful scalp. It is extremely necessary to keep the scalp clean by washing your hair on a regular basis using clean water and a shampoo recommended for your hair type. In case you suspect the onset of any of the causes mentioned here, do contact a dermatologist immediately.
