Pneumonia is one of the most common diseases in the world. Even though any individual can contract pneumonia, children below 5 years of age, aged people, and people with a weak immune system are more likely to succumb to this dreaded infection of the lungs. A person suffering from pneumonia should ideally follow some simple tips to initiate a speedy recovery.
Pneumonia Overview
Pneumonia is a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs, which is characterized by inflammation of lungs and build up of a fluid material in the pulmonary alveoli. The fluid build up hampers the flow of oxygen to the blood, which, in turn, triggers several symptoms. Commonly observed symptoms of pneumonia include fever, chills, high body temperature, excessive sweating, and chest pain. The diagnosis involves taking an X-ray, medical examination, and getting some blood tests done. The treatment includes treating these symptoms using antibiotics, inhalation therapy, and other prescribed medication, depending on the seriousness of the issue.
Pneumonia Recovery - Tips to Follow
The chances of a relapse, which can be a lot more serious, are pretty high. Therefore, a person undergoing pneumonia treatment should not assume that he is out of danger as soon as its signs and symptoms disappear. Generally, it takes 7 to 10 days to recover from the condition, but in some case it may take even more time. Whilst undergoing the recovery process, it's wise to monitor the health of the individual by taking X-rays regularly. During this period, if symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain are observed, they should be promptly brought to the notice of the medical professional involved in treatment. Pneumonia relapse can even result in the individual's death. One has to take some precautionary measures to ensure that recovery is quick and, more importantly, there is no relapse.
  • Medication should be properly taken; a strict schedule should be followed for the same. Usually, the medication prescribed include oral antibiotics for a period of 10 days. If the course is not completed, the chances of a relapse automatically increase.
  • Don't hasten to get back to your daily routine. It's a recovery process wherein your body is trying to recover from a life-threatening lung infection. Give the immune system some time to get back to normal. Don't indulge in tiring activities.
  • You may feel drowsy owing to the administered antibiotics. In such a case, you should try to get as much sleep as possible. This will invariably help the immune system to recover.
  • Fluid intake is of utmost importance throughout the pneumonia recovery exercise. This helps in increasing the speed of the recovery process.
  • You may get tired of coughing throughout the day, but you should avoid taking cough suppressants, as they tend to keep you ill for a longer period. You can use expectorants, but only after consulting a doctor.
  • Smoking―even passive smoking―should be strictly avoided, as it puts more pressure on your already deteriorating immune system.
  • Breathing clean air can help in putting your lungs back on track. On the other hand, breathing polluted air will lead to further complications owing to the irritants present in the polluted air.
  • Taking steam or indulging in long showers can turn out to be helpful in recovery, as these methods help in reliving chest congestion.
  • If the muscles in your chest feel sore or achy, you can use a heating pad to relieve yourself of the pain.
Besides these tips, you should ideally stay away from people with any respiratory tract infection. Studies reveal that people suffering from pneumonia are vulnerable to secondary infections, which may worsen the already bad condition. Though simple, these tips can help you shorten the normal recovery time. However, taking the severity of this condition into consideration, no one would be skeptical of the fact that preventing it is any time better than curing it.
