In the human body, there is a ring of glandular tissue located at the back of the throat. It is called Waldeyer's ring. It consists of tonsils and adenoids. Both these structures are composed of lymphoid tissue. They are believed to produce antibodies in infants. Thus, adenoids are a part of the immune system of your body. Any disorder occurring here leaves an effect on the overall well-being of your body. One of the common abnormalities these glands suffer from is their swelling. The condition is very uncomfortable and irritating.

Causes
Adenoids are quite prone to infection by viruses and bacteria. In majority of the cases, the diagnosis proves the infection of adenoids to be the underlying factor for their swelling. Secondly, swollen adenoids can be a symptom of an immune system disorder called hypergammaglobulinemia. There are many other disorders that can present swollen adenoids as one of their symptoms. Some of them are Tangier disease and tonsillitis.
