Formation of gallstones in men is not something unnatural, and it's more likely to occur in the 40s. Gallstones appear like small pebbles and they form inside the gallbladder due to presence of excess cholesterol, bilirubin, bile salts, and other waste products in bile. Gallstones symptoms are mainly associated with abdominal pain which becomes severe if not treated early.
We shall first explain you the different types of gallstones and their process of formation before studying the symptoms. Our liver produces bile which gets stored in the gallbladder. The greenish color fluid seeps into the small intestine through the bile duct where it aids digestion of fatty foods. Gallstones are formed inside gallbladder when the liquid hardens and gets transformed into stones. The size of the stones depends on the amount of hardened bile and it ranges from the size of a sand grain to a tennis ball.
The two types of gallstones are:
- Pigment Stones: They are basically composed of bilirubin and are dark in color.
- Cholesterol Stones: They are made up of cholesterol and the stones have yellowish-green tinge.
Symptoms of Gallstones in Men
You can easily identify the symptoms specific for gallstones. We have explained you in the following list.
One of the common symptoms of gallstones is chronic pain in upper abdomen. Initially you will feel the pain at a gap of one or two days. But the pain gradually increases and you might be stuck with stomach pain for several hours continuously. The exact position is right side of the upper abdomen. You will also notice that the pain gets triggered after you eat a fatty meal.
Indigestion and burning sensation in stomach is common. Nausea and vomiting occur quite frequently. You will feel compelled to take rest due to this.
You will feel sick all the time and have fever. Your body temperature might range from low to high. However, gallstones fever is different because unlike normal viral fever, you will constantly experience chills, restlessness, shivers, and sweating.
You will notice change in color of your stool. You might also suffer from jaundice. In such a condition the color of your skin will change to yellow and so your eyes.
If you observe those symptoms then you must get an ultrasonography done to confirm its presence. If the stone is minute, then a gallstone surgery is not required. You will be treated with medicines (bile salt tablets to dissolve the stone) and a gallstone diet will be prescribed to you.
It usually comprises almonds, lemons, papaya, celery juice, vegetable juices (beet, carrot, cucumber, tomato), grapes, oranges, and apples. Gallstones dissolution is done by inserting a catheter containing a dissolving solution in the gallbladder. Coming to herbal therapy, you can drink Boldo tea to flush out gallstones. You will have to get the stone removed by a surgery if the size of the stone is too large to be flushed out. You can either opt for a laparoscopic surgery or a conventional open gallstones surgery.
Doctor's say that there is nothing to worry in case you have been diagnosed with gallstones. The surgery is not complicated and you will recover completely after 2-3 days. However, go for a medical check up immediately if you experience the symptoms explained above. This way you can avoid a surgery. Above all, your diet should be healthy and devoid of excessive fats, carbohydrates and cholesterol.
