Did You Know?
Testosterone is also produced in women in small amounts in the ovaries and adrenal gland. It helps women by restoring bone strength and is also helpful in ovarian function.
Testosterone is hailed as the male sex hormone and is responsible for the development of many sexual characteristics in men. It is said that it is one of the most dominant hormones that makes men what they are and imparts them manly characteristics. For a healthy body, the balanced release of testosterone is vital. Lack of testosterone or its abnormal increase are unhealthy and can trigger the outcome of several diseases.

Why Testosterone is Vital?
Produced at the onset of puberty, testosterone hormone is at highest levels in the mid 20s and lowest in the older ages. In men, testosterone is made in the testicles and the pituitary gland controls the functioning of this hormone. It is responsible for deepening of the voice, growth of pubic hair, and production of sperm in young boys. Testosterone levels in the blood can be used to determine various sexual diseases in men like infertility, erectile dysfunction, loss of libido and early signs of puberty.

In case, the testosterone levels in the body are low, the pituitary gland releases a hormone known as luteinizing hormone (LH). This hormone then triggers the production of testosterone in the body. If a man experiences problems related to his sexual health, a testosterone test is done to diagnose the problem. The testosterone in the blood is usually bound to a hormone called sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The rest of the testosterone hormones are free from the blood and during diagnosis, it is these parts that help doctors to detect signs of sexual health complications.

The Risks of Too Much Testosterone

High testosterone levels in body can be due to natural over production of this hormone or it can be due to taking artificial supplements of steroids that claim to boost testosterone levels. While some men are advised by medical experts to take supplements of testosterone due to low levels in their body, some take it to improve bone strength and body building. In the long run however, taking steroids can cause side effects. One should prefer natural testosterone supplements rather than the artificial testosterone supplements that can be harmful for the body. It is a fact that some men have relatively higher testosterone levels than others, however, a significantly high testosterone in a man can lead to various diseases. Some of the possible side effects of this hormone in men have been discussed below:

Prostate Cancer: According to medical researches, men with high levels of testosterone are at a risk of developing prostate cancer. In some cases, it can cause enlarged prostate or lead the development of a new one.

Liver Diseases: Many men who take anabolic steroid supplements to boost testosterone levels may end up over consuming them and hence leading to liver diseases.

Mood swings: Men who have high levels of testosterone may show aggressive behavior, frequent mood swings and even risky behavior as their sexual urge increases to a great extent. Impulsive behavior and sudden mood swings in men are also related to too much testosterone in the body (though medical research is yet to prove it cent percent). Many people say that the possibility of testosterone being an aggression booster is just a belief and not a well established fact.

Acne: It can cause over stimulation of the sebaceous glands leading to overproduction of oil. This can result in facial acne.

Baldness: It has been found that baldness is triggered by the increase in testosterone levels in men.

Heart Attacks: Men with very high levels of this hormone are at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Infertility: Don't get surprised as I got when I found out that abnormally high testosterone levels can cause infertility. Basically, too much testosterone in men can cause in increase in red blood cell count and decrease in sperm count, thereby causing the risk of infertility.

Sleep Apnea: Many men with high testosterone have been reported to have frequent awakening during nights.

Symptoms like aggressive or risky behavior haven't been medically proved yet and so relating them to increase in testosterone levels may not be logical. Nevertheless, it is good for men to get their testosterone level checked so that they can be aware of their sexual health. Once you keep a track of your testosterone levels, you can take necessary measures to treat your problems. Getting your testosterone levels checked would also help you to maintain a healthy lifestyle as per the needs of your body.
